Um, this turned out to be another one of my weird experiments. It is painted on that horrid, crappy compressed toilet paper known as ‘cheap watercolour paper’. You can tell by looking at it. The background texture is pretty rough.
Anyway I started this portrait with a pencil drawing and then airbrushed the skin tones. The hair was a flat black and looked like crap. So what to do? Well I took a break and had a look through some hairstyle magazines and saw one with bright red on top and black underneath.
Because I wanted bright red I used thick paint and scraped it onto the paper. I then played with it with my fingers and just scraped it around. Ugh! Didn't look right so I added some orange and yellow and rubbed that with my fingers. OK, so now I've got something different. I should have shielded the background at the top of her hair from overspray – but I didn't. And I'm not one for erasing or scratching, so I just left it as is.
Overall – a bit of a hash job but I actually like it!
